Study Tips for O Level Exams

O Level exams are graded very differently from how most schools test you during the term. Cambridge and Edexcel examiners award marks for specific things in your answer, not just whether your final conclusion is correct. These study tips are built around that reality.

Start with the syllabus, not the textbook Your school's textbook covers more than the syllabus sometimes requires, and skips depth in areas the syllabus expects. Get the actual Cambridge or Edexcel syllabus document for your subject and check off topics as you cover them, so you know exactly what is examinable.

Past papers are not optional Work through at least five years of past papers per subject, and mark yourself against the official mark scheme, not just your own judgment of whether the answer looks right. Mark schemes reveal exactly which keywords and steps earn marks, which is often more specific than what a textbook explains.

Learn command words O Level questions use specific command words like "state," "explain," "describe," and "evaluate," each expecting a different depth of answer. A student who writes a one-line answer to an "explain" question loses marks regardless of correctness, because explain requires reasoning, not just a statement.

Time yourself under real conditions Do at least three full past papers under actual timed conditions before your exam. Many students know the content but run out of time because they have never practiced pacing themselves across an entire paper.

Review your own mistakes properly When you get a past paper question wrong, do not just read the correct answer and move on. Write out, in your own words, exactly why your original answer lost marks. This is slower but is where most real improvement happens.

Do not neglect easier subjects Students often over-study their weakest subject and under-prepare a subject they find "easy," then lose avoidable marks there. Spread revision time roughly by how many marks each subject contributes to your overall results, not just by difficulty.

Build a two-week final revision plan In your last two weeks, shift from learning new content to active revision: past papers, flashcards for definitions, and reviewing your own error log from earlier practice.
